What is a CT scan?
CT scan or computed tomography an array of multiple X-ray tubes and detectors to create cross-sectional and 3D images of structures within the body. The patient lies on the table which moves through a ring of rotating detectors. It is a fast, accurate, noiseless and painless procedure.
What preparation is required before the scan?
For an elective CT scan of the abdomen, fasting for upto 4 hours is required prior to the procedure. The patient may be asked to drink some oral water soluble contrast mixed with water/ juice for upto 1 hour before the scan, to improve visualization of the bowel. A recent serum creatinine report is required before any contrast enhanced CT scan.
What is the time taken for the scan?
The actual time taken for the scan is less than a minute.
Is it safe?
Since it involves radiation, it is unsafe for pregnant women. Please inform the technician if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. The risks of contrast reactions will be explained to you before you give an informed consent for the procedure.
Is an appointment required for the procedure?
Please book your appointment in advance, in order to reduce your waiting time at the clinic. We do cater to walk-in patients. Emergency patients, hospitalized patients, patients with physical disability and geriatric patients are given preference at the clinic.
When is the report expected?
The report can be expected within 24 hours of the scan.
