What is MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses powerful external magnetic fields to align the body’s internal hydrogen atoms and use computers to produce detailed images of structures within the body. It is different from CT scan in its working principle and does not involve any radiation.
Is it safe?
Only external electromagnetic coils are used for the scan. It does not involve radiation. Hence it is safe for all age groups including pregnant women.
What preparation is required before the scan?
As MRI uses strong magnetic fields, you are required to remove any metal accessories like watches, hairpins, jewellery, dentures, piercings, hearing aids, wigs etc. before the procedure. People with electronically activated implants and cardiac pacemakers are contra-indicated from undergoing the scan. You may require to change into hospital gowns, better suited for imaging. You will be provided with a locker for the safety of your personal belongings.
What is the time taken for the procedure?
Time taken for the procedure may vary from 15-90 mins, depending on the scan.
Is an appointment required for the procedure?
Please book your appointment in advance, in order to reduce your waiting time at the clinic.
When is the report expected?
Within 24 hours of the scan. You will be informed in case of any unexpected delays.
